A box with a mass of 7 kilograms is pushed up a ramp to a height of 5 meters. What is the work done against the force of gravity? Assume the ramp has negligible friction.
work is force times distance. you have a distance, but not a force, not yet. that mass has a weight, so we can find the force needed to move it against gravity, and find the force.
If you try to draw a free body diagram, you will notice that force due to gravity is acting downward (m x g), assuming that we our vertical component of the force is just enough to balance the force due to gravity ( work done by force against gravity), the work done by this will be simply 7 x 9.81 x 5 Joules. The concept which i am trying to tell you about, is the concept of potential energy, what actually does the term potential energy of a body mean. Do read upon that its interesting. :)
