Does the author expect the reader to make an emotional connection to the story? Explain your answer.

I would say, yes. B/c he made the characters seem real, yet, he has only given us one side.
(Like in Beis din, if the dayan listens to one side he would be more emotionally appealed)
So here the author wants us to feel what the injured guy felt, (what was his name, forgot).
