Lol, you could start with Spain, who got very rich by going to the Americas and stealing gold and other resources. Then, Portugal, Denmark, Brits, and the French followed.

RyanOhio is right, however they did not initially look for gold. They looked for preservatives. Europeans look for gold during the industrial age. Spices were a huge success to the Europeans.
