Best Response. There.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Well - you did ask for a, "best response." Earthquakes happen when tectonic plates slip and grind up against each other. The reason we don't have many earthquakes in the Northeastern U.S, is because of the tectonic positioning of plates. You see more earthquakes occurring in West-Coast regions, because of the Northern American Plate and Pacific American Plate. Plate interiors are more stable than boundaries, that's why we seem to experience more quakes, because Northern Eastern U.S lies along a large "boundary."

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Preexisting faults formed in the Northeastern Interior, a more complex model than the Boundaries, and while it may seem to violate the Tectonic Model, it doesn't. These ancient faults are being 'reactivated,' and cause tremors and earthquakes as they slide. Stress is being released along these lines of 'weakness.'
