The Han Dynasty: The arts and sciences thrived to new heights. The Chinese people still refer to themselves as the Han people in recognition of China's achievements of this period. examination stressed the teachings of Confucius. Poets and prose writers developed a clear style that is famous in Chinese literature. Under the Han China produced important works of history, medicine, philosophy, and politics. Artists produced glazed pottery, large stone carvings. bronze vessels, and exquisite lacquerwork. The weaving of silk in rich colors and patterns of geometric designs or cloud and mountain themes became a major industry and source of export trade. Han rulers kept their lands closed tho outsiders. To do this, they used middlemen from neighboring countries to do their trading with other countries. They kept their achievements secret, such as the inventions of the seismograph, paper, and the medical practice of acupuncture. During the Han dynasty, Chinese engineers developed salt mining, and Chinese artisans worked with bronze and gold and they glazed pottery.
