5x - 3y = -11 -->(2) 2x - 6y = -14 --> (-5) -------------------- 10x - 6y = -22 (result of multiplying by 2) -10x + 30y = 70 (result of multiplying by -5) --------------------add 24y = 48 y = 48/24 y = 2 now sub 2 in for y in either of the equations 5x - 3y = -11 5x - 3(2) = -11 5x - 6 = -11 5x = -11 + 6 5x = -5 x = -1 check... 2x - 6y = -14 2(-1) - 6(2) = -14 -2 - 12 = -14 -14 = -14 (correct) x = -1 and y = 2
