OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

my laptop's IE (internet explorer) has stopped working.any help appreciated !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Get Chrome!

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

got chrome or firefox around? they're much better than Internet Explorer

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

I HAVE CHROME/FIREFOX/OPERA ,BUT I NEED THIS BECAUSE CERTAIN WEBLINKS OPEN ONLY IN IE.SO.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmmm certain webllinks in this website?

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

NOT IN THIS WEBSITE BUT I NEED THAT KINDLY HELP.

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

I'd do a reinstall of it I gather, it seems that it got hit by an exploit, off the many IE is vulnerable to

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

exploit, ???

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

yeap, there are ways to access some objects, since IE allows some level of access to the WScript engine, they've improved that in the new versions, though still there are ways around it

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

wscript engine allows access to stuff in windows, so you can affect objects in the file system

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

is limited these days, used to be much worse, but still they can cause nuances

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

CAN U HELP ME HOW TO SOLVE THE ISSUE @jdoe0001 ?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well, is easier when sitting on the machine in question =) but as a quickie, just reinstall IE... I asumme you have IE9, so just install IE10

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

NO I HAVE IE 10

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

have you checked for any Restore Points?

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

I TRIED SOLVING BUT INVAIN !

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

HOW TO DO THAT Restore Points ?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well... is a feature of windows, system restore, but depending on how old it might be, you may want to restore the system back to that, or not it'd be in Start > Accessories > system tools > system restore

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

worse comes to worse, you can always rollback your machine to factory settings, if that's reasonable for you

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so... you have no restore points... ok.... I gather you never imaged the system either... so.... well.. the simplest try will be to reinstall IE10

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

OK.

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

I TRIED THIS SEVERAL TIMES OF REINSTALLING ,BUT ALL INVAIN.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

what if you could roll back the machine to factory settings? would you? that means you'd lose all info, unless you back it up, and the machine will start from a clean slate

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

NO.

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT !

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so... what do you mean by "in vain", it didn't reinstall?

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

I TRIED REINSTALLING BUT IT DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM.(INVAIN)

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

do you run any spyware utility?

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

I USE MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS .

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

did you UNINSTALL IE, before trying to install it again?

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

YES.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

the only thing I can think of, is that the reinstall didn't remove the initial issue reboot to Safe Mode so.... if you can go to REGEDIT, the registry editor, Start > Run > regedit.exe close any IE windows that are open and go to LOCAL MACHINE, and CURRENT USER sections and then SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Internet Explorer and delete those 2 keys then retry the reinstall

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

other thing I can think of, is some spyware. so-called, is likely just an affected .mhtml file or so...... I'd think something like SPYBOT may be able to pick it up
