Why did slavery start in the colonies? How were slaves brought to the colonies? What types of jobs did slaves do in each colonial region: New England, Middle and the South? Why were the jobs in each region different? Why were slaves important to the colonial economy?
@Kfins99
The American colonists needed cheap labor to grow their economy quickly by exporting things to England and the rest of Europe. Note that following American Independence slavery continued in America for many years after it had been banned by England all over its colonies. England banned slavery in it's colonies in 1807 America kept slavery until 1865 Slaves were brought mainly on boat from Africa (Southern). South- Worked on plantations or house slave Middle- House slave New England- House slave Different regions of the colonies had different soil properties and different ways of life. Slavery was only a major contribution to the economy in the southern colonies--Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. These states' economies depended on crops that required intensive cultivation by unskilled hands. Originally, indentured servants provided this labor. Unlike indentured servants, slaves could provide unpaid labor for their entire lifetimes and their children were also slaves. As a result, slaves became a sizable demographic in all the aforementioned states.
