I'm learning about completing the squares, quadratic equartions, factoring, and complex numbers. I understand why we use the plus minus square root, but when do we use it? When you're answering what type of question do you use it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

every time u use a square root

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you see this is how a square root works, a square root is the reverse of a number squared, so let say u are given \[\sqrt{4}\], this is equal to 2. and 2^2 = 4 thus u can see a square root as the oposite of a squaring a number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but let look at -2, -2 squared = 4 so from this u can see that the square root of 4 = both 2 and -2,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so every time u square root a number u have to take into account the positive and negative values
