Why did the British abandon Boston in early 1776?

The colonial militias/newly formed Continental Army had moved the cannon captured at Fort Ticonderoga by Ethan Allan to the areas overlooking Boston. The British would have been pounded until they either surrendered or were forced out. So they pulled out.
