Meg walks 5 blocks South and then turns around and walks 8 blocks back to the north .The distance that she walks is 13 blocks. What is her displacement?

If you walk five blocks down, and then you move 8 blocks in the opposite direction (Or -8 blocks south), your total displacement is the effective blocks you've moved. In this case it's 5-8 = -3. But since displacement is always positive, you effectively moved 3 blocks.
