A ball is rolled off the edge of a swimming pool and strikes the water 2.0 away 0.30 seconds later (a) what was the initial speed of the ball? (b) how high is the edge of the pool from the surface of water?

Welcome matheresa. For part a of this problem, we find the initial speed would have been completely horizontal as it rolls off the edge of the pool. The ball wouldn't be moving up or down at the beginning. |dw:1383204323548:dw| So we can use the fact that it struck 2.0 m away in a time of 0.30 s to find it's horizontal speed using:\[v = \frac{ \Delta x }{ \Delta t }\]
