Trigonometry help please, do I use tan, sin, or cos??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can anyone explain?

hartnn (hartnn):

which ratio relates opposite side and hypotenuse ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Opposite over hypotenuse would be sin

hartnn (hartnn):

notice that QR is "OPPOSITE" side of angle P and yes, so we use sine here :) sin P = ... ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! So you start with what direction it is from the ANGLE.. from the angle, the side is opposite, and then you put that over the hypotenuse, is that correct?

hartnn (hartnn):

bingo!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.7547 = x / 12.38

hartnn (hartnn):

so, x = ... ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Divide by .7547 x = 16.40?

hartnn (hartnn):

7547 = x / 12.38 multiply both sides by 12.38 to isolate 'x' , what do u get ?

hartnn (hartnn):

i meant 0.7547

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9.34

hartnn (hartnn):

yep! thats correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh yeah, got the multiply/divide thing mixed up :p Thank you! @hartnn

hartnn (hartnn):

welcome ^_^
