Jose is comparing the prices of two carpet cleaning companies. Company A charges $0.40 per square foot of carpet area and an additional $22 per day for services. Company B charges 0.60 per square foot of carpet area and an additional $18 per day for services.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Part A: Write equations to represent Company A and Company B's total charges for cleaning a certain carpet area in a day. Define the variable used in the equations. (4 points) Part B: Which company would charge less for cleaning 500 square feet of carpet area? Justify your answer. (3 points) Part C: How much money is saved by using the services of Company A instead of Company B for cleaning 200 square feet of carpet area? (3 points)

OpenStudy (ranga):

Let x represent the area of carpet to be cleaned and C represent the total cost of cleaning the carpet. Company A charges $0.40 per square foot of carpet area and an additional $22 per day. So the equation for company A is: C = 0.4x + 22 Company B charges 0.60 per square foot of carpet area and an additional $18 per day. So the equation for company B is: C = 0.6x + 18 Those two equations answer part A) For part B) put x = 500 in each of the above two equations and find the charges for company A and B. Compare and see which one is lower and that will be your answer. We will get to C after you answer B.

what do i divide or multiply in part B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for part A) 500 divided by 0.4 + 22 = 1272?

OpenStudy (ranga):

No. For Part A they ask you for the two equations which I answered before: Answer to Part A): The equation for company A is: C = 0.4x + 22 The equation for company B is: C = 0.6x + 18 where x represents the area of carpet to be cleaned and C represents the total cost of cleaning the carpet.
