the number of protons for a certain element is fixed, for example, Carbon always has 6 protons, Nitrogen always has 7 protons. Isotopes are element with different amounts of neutrons.
Carbon-12 has 6 protons and 6 neutrons
Carbon-14 has 6 protons and 8 neutrons
