trying to get general overview of databases in general, then would like to learn sql. Not sure how open study works - thought it is a self paced tutorial.

There are some self paced tutorials that are partnered up with OS. However, the site as a whole is more like a peer to peer tutoring system. This lets you ask about a very wide range of educational topics.

A database is basically a collection of related information. A really common example is for a store where they have a list of items, the number on hand, price, description, and so on. But they have much wider applications in organizing all sorts of information.
