in this case factoring and completing the sq, are the same. you would want to get rid of the 2 in front of the parenthesis in any case.

no, you are forgetting about x^2 and anyway, I am confusing you, if you want to expand the parenthesis instead, then you should have gone with -8 from both sides. lets do that then....
