I need help setting up an equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Create a quadratic function, f(x), in vertex form. The a should be between 4 and –4, the h will be your birth month, and the k will be your birth day. Write your equation below. My birth month is October and day is the 2nd.

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

f(x) might be = a(x + h) - k f(x) = 2(x + 10) - 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what he said ^^^^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so if I want to create a g(x) function that will open in the same direction as f(x) and same vertex but, will be narrower, what would I do?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

right increase the value of a to, say 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, that makes sense! So, if I were to create a h(x) function that opened in the opposite direction and have the same vertex but, be wider than f(x) I would make a=1?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

eh guy i'm sorry i messed up its a quadratic so it should be 2(x + 10)^2 - 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

no to open in the other direction a must be negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so I could change it to -2?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thank you for your help :)

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

yw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, this would be the standard form of y= 2(x + 10)^2 - 2 y=2x2+40x+198
