(1,3) means all points between 1 and 3 excluding 1 and 3
OpenStudy (aravindg):
[1,3] includes 1 and 3 also.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
and U signifies Union (also known as set adding). So [1,3] U [3,4] = [1,4]
