Just adding to SkyRilio18's answer, we can also read the Mayan language today -- it took many, many years to figure that out. A lot of Mayan works were destroyed in the 17th century, unfortunately, by a zealous Spanish friar who believed them to be works of the devil. On the other hand, the Incans didn't have a written language, but they used a system of knots tied on strings to tell them things. Unfortunately, we have no idea today on how to read them even though we have a lot of those that survived into today, unlike the Mayan books.
