Factor out the top and you should be able to cancel!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you factor the top? I'm really bad at factoring... :(

OpenStudy (shamil98):

\[\frac{ (2x+1)(x+1) }{ 2x+1}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so f(x)=x+1?

OpenStudy (shamil98):

yer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@shamil98 do you understand why f(-1/2) is undefined? That's the only other part I don't get...

OpenStudy (shamil98):

2x + 1 = 0 2x = -1 x= - 1/2 the domain is all real numbers except -1/2 because f(-1/2) makes the denominator 0 and you can't divide by zero ^.^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank youuuuuu

OpenStudy (shamil98):

to find the domain of a rational function you set the denominator to equal zero and solve.

OpenStudy (shamil98):

yer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah it's not f(-1/2) because then you would get a function that's undefined.
