at a carnival, Emily, Avery, Teshaun, and Philippe will take part in a race. If there are no ties and they are the only four people in the race, in how many different orders can they finish?

There are four possible values for first place. Once the first racer finishes, there remain three possible values for second place. Once the second racer finishes, there remain two possible values for third place. Once the third racer finishes, there remains only one possible value for fourth place. 4·3·2·1 = 24
