Geometry: Find x and y in the diagram. Justify your answer. (10x+5y)° = 72° (15x+4y)° = 80°

hartnn (hartnn):

its just algebra, solving simultaneous equations tried it ?

hartnn (hartnn):

you can try elimination method, know what that is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please just tell me how to do it

hartnn (hartnn):

ok, lets do elimination method, multiply 1st equation by 4 what do u get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40x+20y

hartnn (hartnn):

40x+20y =.... what ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40x+20y=288

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, now multiply 2nd equation by 5 what u get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

75x+20y=400 then the 20y's gets cancelled right

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, if you subtract the equations, 20y gets cancelled :) so what value of 'x' do you get then ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

688/115 ? Something wrong

hartnn (hartnn):

we are subtracting equations, so, 75x - 40x = 400 - 288 got this ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah okay so x=16/5?

hartnn (hartnn):

yes! now find y using (10x+5y)° = 72°

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have the answer in the back of the book it says x=4 !!?

hartnn (hartnn):

thats not possible for the equations u have posted, x=3.2 so, maybe check your equations again?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There's a diagram how can I show u though

hartnn (hartnn):

whats the origin question? so that even i can verify your equations....

hartnn (hartnn):

ok, use the draw tool, its below the reply box

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Give me a moment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the starrs represent the degree sign

hartnn (hartnn):

any lines parallel?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea m ll n & p ll q

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you there?

hartnn (hartnn):

so, 15x +4y and 80 are not equal, they are supplementary angles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh :(

hartnn (hartnn):

but they doesn't seem to be parallel, are you sure they are given parallel in the question ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it just asks for x and y and to justify the ans

hartnn (hartnn):

(10x+5y) + 80 =180 (15x+4y) + 72=180 gives you x=4, y = 12 and for that only p||q should be there.

hartnn (hartnn):

did you get how (10x+5y) + 80 =180 (15x+4y) + 72=180 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when do you put the 180 ? in which questions its really confusing. i understand how you got the answer right now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if its supplementary u use the 180 ?

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, if A and B are supplementary, A+B =180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh now i get it

hartnn (hartnn):

since p||q , 10x+5y and 80 are supplementary

hartnn (hartnn):

property : interior angles between parallel lines are supplementary

hartnn (hartnn):

sorry, i didn't mean to interrupt your typing, what were you gonna say ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its fine i was just going to thank you!! really thanks alot ur a life saver!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have another question would you mind helping? its the last one i promise!

hartnn (hartnn):

sure , ask :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1383391575882:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Two lines are parallel. the measures of two corresponding angles are a*and 2b* , and the measures of two same-side interior angles are a* and b*.find value of a*

hartnn (hartnn):

correcponding angles are congruent . interior angles are supplementary.
