Why is land so important in China?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The majority of china's huge population are peasants barely making a living through agriculture (a pretty constant part of Chinese society throughout its lifespan, making the issue of land a pretty reoccurring theme). Land is also important because in china, the Chinese depend on their rice and crops to live, such as vegetables, where they get their health from. And, all of the people that live in China need a place to live.
