Please help! I am pretty sure that the answer is D, but I need to be sure. Thanks in advance. ~Micah K. Malcolm has $638.54 in his checking account. He must maintain a $500 balance to avoid a fee. He wrote a check for $159.50 today. Write and solve an inequality to solve for the least amount of money he needs to deposit to avoid a fee. A. 638.54 + 159.50 − x ≥ 500; x ≥ $298.04 B. 638.54 + 159.50 − x ≥ 500; x ≥ $298.04 C. 638.54 − 159.50 + x ≥ 500; x ≥ $20.96 D. 638.54 − 159.50 + x ≤ 500; x ≤ $20.96

It would be C, not D, because his balance needs to be higher than or equal to 500 in order to avoid a fee.

Yes, it would.

:)

But the question is: which one is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, which one is similar to D but says "greater than or equal to" instead of "less than or equal to"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think that the answer is D, because the balance needs to be at most $500. That means less than or equal to. Since D uses that sign, that means that the answer is D, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm pretty sure that the balance needs to be at least $500, because if it drops below, he gets fined. So if we want him to avoid the fine, his balance has to be no less than 500, right?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

"He must maintain a $500 balance to avoid a fee." should be read as "He must maintain a $500 MINIMUM balance to avoid a fee."
