What this is asking for you to is to look up a 19th Century story and a poem (1800s). You don't necessarily need to know the history of the 19th Century. You need to understand the perspective in which the author is trying to tell you. Then write about your understandings of the American Culture from what you have read. Use much of your skill of analysis and then support it with the evidence (the story and the poem).
