During his deep slumber, the American Revolutionary war passed by. After he awakes he faces the many changes that became over the two decades he slept. Irving displays some of the root characteristics that were portrayed in mythologies of the nation. The exciting period of time in this story, the mysterious and magical properties that are seen, and as well as the strange characters of this story are only a few of the many characteristics that Irving displays in this tale. Not only does Irving incorporate these characteristics in his tale, but he also gives the story a better impact from these characteristics.
