Let S = {−1, 0, 2, 4, 7}. Find f (S) if a) f (x) = 1. b) f (x) = 2x + 1. c) f (x) = x /5. d) f (x)=(x2 + 1)/3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

btw the x/5 is a floor function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no wait ceiling...

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

|dw:1383506216037:dw|

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

you would plot or you just need the results? or what is the question? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they dont ask for plot :) i think i got some of them but the C is a celinig function and the last is a floor function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

those are the ones that i dont

OpenStudy (anonymous):

get*

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

|dw:1383506625786:dw| this is not ceiling or floor function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i mean i cant type it ... but its on my book

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

:) got it, so x/5 is taken as ceiling or floor, and which one, it matters.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

X/5 it has ceiling function, the last one is floor

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

so we have x/5 ceiling means the smallest int not less than x (which is not x/5)

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

|dw:1383507080927:dw| something like this, would it be OK?

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

where did you stuck with the 4th?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhm idnt need to plot, i need the values, so for S=-1 it turns into -1/5 but ... since it s celinig function .. what would the answer be?

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

I would not try to draw it :) but if we think together you can find out the results

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

so in 3rd the -1 goes -1/5 and ceiling is the largest int not greater than -1/5 which is that, integer, but not greater than -1/5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that same value?

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

:) sorry I wrote wrong, ceiling is the smallest int not less than x :) the plot was good

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

-1 is int, but less than -1/5 so 0 is the good number.

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

you simply checks the two integers around it and you can find.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh it has to be integers right? ... good good. imma try to do it, thank you <3

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

yes, that is why the plot shows only horizontal lines. notice the blank circle and the full circle at the ends of the lines.

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

let's check the 4th one, with -1. (x2+1)/3

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

that has the floor, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, can i just ask you if my ansers r corret?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have 0,0,1,1,2 as answers for each value of S

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

I do not know your answer. I think you will do it and if the logic is not good I may be able to fix it.

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

in case of the 4th function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4th function is floor function. Are my answers right?

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

I do not think so 0,0,1 are OK, but how did you make the last two numbers? how did you calculate?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4/5 = 0.8 so it cant be 0 because is less than x aight?

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

x=4 x2=16 x2+1=17 (x2+1)/3=5,667 and ... 4th function and you seem to do the 3rd

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im doing the third function still

OpenStudy (anonymous):

those were my answers to the third function

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

ok, then I agree 0,0,1,1,2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for the 4th function i have 0,0,1,5,16, is that okay?

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

yes that is it, thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg thank you, u saved my life here, i can actually study for my test now :) thank yu thank you!

OpenStudy (zeeporo):

good luck
