which is not a polynomial? p(x)=x^4-1/2x^3+5x^2-4.144x+1 f(x)=sqrt2x-5 g(x)=-(x-4)^3(x+5)^4(3-9x)^8 h(x) = x^3-2x^2+3x-x^-1+1

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmmm if the "x" variable is not the exponential one, then you'd know is a horizontal parabola and thus it won't pass the "vertical line test" and thus is not a \(\bf function\) per definition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't get it ... Is a function the same as a polynomial? How can I figure out that the f(x) isn't a polynomial by looking at it. Do I have to solve every problem?

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

polynomial is a formula of the function that could be written as sum of power variable . see which one of them cant be written as sum of power variable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sum of power variable?

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

am gonna give u example for polynomial \[x^5+3x^4+2x=0\]

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

"sum of power variable" i;m not sure if said it correctly wat i ment is u have a variable x for example .

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

still confused ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you Jdoe!

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

yw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It cant have a negative exponent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

h(x) is not a polynomial then?
