Calc Help... What is the worst that can happen if I treat dy/dx as a fraction?

OpenStudy (jbo11):

it wouldn't make sense, you should never have to use it as a fraction for questions ask to find dy/dx which could also be seen as y' (y prime)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in calculus it is frowned upon to treat dy/dx as a fraction... however you will need to treat it as a fraction if and when you get to differential equations.

The worse that can happen, is that you fail the exam, which may cause a lower grade for the course, and a lower index, which may result in not getting in to best law school or med school.

I am looking for a counter example showing why dy/dx cannot be used as a ratio.
