In a stem and leaf chart, numbers are broken down into two parts. If we see the first column with the set of numbers of: 1 | 8 9 , we have to know that this is the same thing as being the base 10s. 

Seems confusing. But here's what I mean. When we think of base 10s, we think of as it being 10s, 100s, 1000s etc. The number 1 means that it is in the tens place and the numbers 8 and 9 are the numbers in the ones place. This concludes that the number is 18 and 19.

As this stem and leaf chart goes on, it follows the same rule that I we used to get the numbers 18 and 19 in the first column.

First, do you know how to find to find the median of a set of numbers? It doesn't necessarily have to mean using the stem and leaf plot.
