PLEASE HELP! DYER EMERGENCY! What is the first step of constructing a perpendicular line from a point not on a given line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

start by finding the slope of the perpendicular line. Perpendicular line always have negative reciprical slope, ie. a line with slope 4 is perpendicular to one with slope -1/4. then use the slope and the point to find the y-intercept or just use point slope form for the line.

Wait, is this a Geometry question? Are you talking about constructions with a straightedge and compass?

If all that sounds foreign to you, you can just discard it....
