After jaws, the next derived trait was the presence of lungs. The salamander, lizard, tiger, gorilla and human share a common ancestor that had lungs. The lamprey and shark do not share this ancestor, and they have gills instead of lungs. http://dtc.pima.edu/blc/182/lesson3/3step3/3step3page1.htm
