If an equation is y = -x^2 - 6x - 8 and x is -3, would the equation be: y = -3^2 - 6x - 8 or positive 3^2 ??

Hello there! :) the equation would be positive 3^2, because a negative times a negative is a positive: y = -1(-3)^2 Does this make sense?
