.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 gallon of water / 8 pounds = 32 gallons of water / x pounds Using cross multiplication: 1 * x = 8 * 32 x = 256 So, 256 pounds.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it does kinda depend on the density of the water (sea water, fresh water, etc.) but yea, 256 pounds sounds about right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, you are right jgem. However, most gallons of water are about 8 pounds, so I just used that as an average :P. The dimensional analysis comes in when I stated "1 gallon of water / 8 pounds = 32 gallons of water / x pounds". Dimensional analysis is basically setting up proportions for measurements and conversions.

Hope that helps!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

silly question but how did you know that there are 8 pounds in a gallon of water?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are about 3785 milliliters in a gallon, so 3785 * 1 gram = 3785 grams. There are about 454 grams in a pound, so 3785 / 454 grams = 8.337... which is about 8, so there are 8 pounds in a gallon of water.
