Solve. –3|s| = 18 A. s = –6 or s = 6 B. no solution C. s = 6 only D. s = –6 only

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just dont know if i shoud choose a or c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you wan't to check for yourself, just divide. 18 divided by -3 = -6

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

how about you show us how you would solve it so we know what part you're not able to grasp fully

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i did this wrong i didn't see the bottom it's D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

only -6 because 6*-3 is -18

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

the absolute value is a little tricky, it is a piece-wise defined function that is when it is less than zero, and when it is greater than or equal to zero therefore, -3|s| = 18 means -3s = 18 AND -3 (-s) = 18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but the 18 is positive not negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know, that's why it's only -6

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

do not listen to @scortlewabermop he's not sure what he is doing yet.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 negative number times eachother equal a posittive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is d then

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

NO! that IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

haven't you been reading my post? :P -3|s| = 18 means -3s = 18 AND -3 (-s) = 18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have been reading them i just dont understand them completly

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

-3|s| = 18 means -3s = 18 AND -3 (-s) = 18 solve for s individually, this means you will have two values for s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry i'm a still asleep sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so a

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

why would be a? did you solve for s? what if those values are not correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nevermind

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

I don't want to leave this thread without you understanding the concept of absolute values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if i did it right the answer is C

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

where is your solution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how i did the equation?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

on how you solved and got C

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

I just want to see so I can walk you through the steps if there's something wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3 * (-6) =18 would be how i didnt get c because i skimmed through my answers and forgot it was -6

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

so your s = -6 only?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah if i did positive six it would be -18

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

you're half correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

half?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

yes. HALF :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How am i half correct then?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

because we do not know if s' value is greater than or equal to zero OR less than zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What did you come up with?
