What is the Value of x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

the angles are on opposite sides of the vertex, so are called vertically opposite angles and are equal in their measures so you can equate the 2 angles 8x + 16 = 3x + 84 now just solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but how?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

start by subtracting 3x from both sides of the equation 8x -3x + 16 = 3x -3x + 84 so 5x +16 = 84 now you should be able to solve the 2 step equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so.. 5x + 16 and then + 84?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well you could but it just makes the solution harder to find.... try subtracting 16 from both sides of the equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay.. 84-16=68 and then 5x-16?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

5x + 16 -16 = 84 -16 what does the equation become..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x=68?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then it would eequal 13.6?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

it would be the value of x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13.6 would be the value of x right?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

correct
