The monarch of England (colonizer of Maryland) was James II in 1688. Most of England was Protestant, but James II was Catholic and wanted to turn England Catholic. The English people got upset about that and forced him out of the country in 1688. Due to long communication times word only came of the deposition (forcing out of the country) in 1689 for Maryland. Since English people at the time hated Catholics, they rioted when they realized that the Catholics had tried to defend a King who was determined to convert England to Catholicism.

i think a conflict between Catholic King James II and Protestant King William of Orange over who would be King of England, Scotland and Ireland. The cause of the war was the deposition of James II as King of the Three Kingdoms by William (who was married to [ James' daughter Mary II) in 1688.
