If you wanted, you could test that out without graphing it by simply plugging the points into the inequality and testing each point. The point that makes the inequality false is not part of the solution.
Or you could graph the inequality on your graphing calculator and figure it out that way. If you don't have a graphing calculator, use http://www.desmos.com
could you explain how to plug in the points into the equation?
Okay, so each point is in the form (x,y)
Which means plug the first number in for x. Plug the second number in for y.
So for the point \(\color\green{(-1,0)}\), when you plug it in to \(\color\green{y} > |\color\green{x} + 1|-1\) You will end up with \(\color\green{0} > |\color\green{-1} + 1| - 1\) Simplify that and figure out whether it is true or false.
If it is true, then move on and try the next point. If it is false, then we have found the point of interest.
i got A as the answer because it was false. Can you confirm this?
So \(0 > -1\) is false? Are you sure about that?
Are you saying that 0 cannot be greater than a negative number?
o no i messed up
When in doubt, make a number line.
Okay, so you should at least know how to test all the other points.
i tried but still didnt get a correct answer
i got C
Correct. C is not a part of the solution of the given inequality.
thanks
can you confirm if i got this right. I got 2 is bigger than 2. http://prntscr.com/226pak
So you are given y < 2|x - 1| - 2 and you are testing the point (2, 3) Here's what I get: 3 < 2|2 - 1| - 2 3 < 2|1| - 2 3 < 2(1) - 2 3 < 2 - 2 3 < 0 False
What did you get for that one? Show your steps.
This time they want the point that will make the solution TRUE
o your right i messed up
Try not to mix up the x's and y's
ive tried and i still cant find an answer
Keep trying
I think its A i think..
@mathkid1 the proper thing to do is show your steps. Don't just say the answer is A. Show me why you have chosen A.
i plugged in the points and got 3y and -1
No, show me the full algebra steps you performed to arrive at A as the possible answer.
1-1=0X2=0-2=-2
That does not look like correct steps to me.
First off, there's no equal sign
Secondly, your steps should look similar to the steps I posted above for the previous problem.
can you work out choice A for me please. that might help
I could have sworn I did that already. Maybe you just didn't understand it
that was my 1st problem i think
No, it was Part A of the problem you are currently working on
And even if it isn't the steps are still similar
ok i think its D because the numbers looked equal when i plugged them in
"because the numbers looked equal" We're not looking for what's equal bro
can you just tell me the answer lol so i can understand it
Telling you the answer won't help you understand it. Only understanding the process will help you understand.
Can you tell me then explain in?
I will not do that. Go back over everything I already explained to you....until you understand it.
i plug in all the numbers but no set give m a correct equation
