OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I figure out the period, block, and group of an element without looking at the periodic table?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Figuring out the group is pretty easy if you're given the number of valence electrons. The only way to figure out the rest is to have the table memorized, or they give you the number of electrons (or atomic number) and you write it's electronic configuration.
