yeah, in a old basement. Well, let's just say the inventor used to own your house but couldn't pay for it so you or your family came and bought it.

or he died and the house was sold, so he left all his inventory in the basement

Or a relative is a scientist, but he goes missing. You, wanting to solve the mystery, go exploring his house. You enter into his lab and start looking for clues. Accidentally, you activate a time machine that takes you into the future. There you find clues about the lost relative's existence in the same time period that you are in at the present. Then it turns into a story of you trying to find your relative in the future!
