How is nuclear stability related to the neutron-proton ratio?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The proton-neutron ratio is related to stability because it has to do with the band of stability and the closer the element is to it. The band is a 1:1 through 1:1.5 ratio of proton:neutron so if a the closer an element is 1:2 then it is out of the band and unstable. Usually all the elements higher then bismuth (83) are unstable http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_is_nuclear_stability_related_to_the_proton_neutron_ratio#slide1
