Create an example of how to add two trinomials and how to subtract two trinomials. Can you give me an example of two trinomials that can be added together and subtracted? Preferably positive, and if you can please explain how to add and subtract them?

\[x^3+2x^2-x+3\] and \[x^3-x^2+x-2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

By adding them together you get \[2x^3+x^2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Subtracting the second from the first will give you \[3x^2-2x+5\]

Ahh sum has an error, the first should be \[2x^3+x^2\]

No, sorry can you explain how you added and subtracted them? To add do you just combine the like terms and then add both together?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exactly, just look at the numbers before the x and add them together if they have the same x term. For subtraction you do the same except subtract instead of add. If we look at each term individually it becomes much easier. For the x^3 term in both we have 1 and 1. Adding gives us 2, subtracting gives us 0. All we have to do is do the same thing for the other terms as well.

Ok that makes sense! But what did you mean when you said the sum had an error?

The first time I added them together I mistyped it and left off the constand +1 at the end. The second one was right.

So that was the sum for when you added them together?

Sorry about this but I still don't understand how you got what you did when subtracting...can you explain it one more time?
