why is peer-reviewing of scientific works important?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Peer review means that your classmates judge your work. It is important from tech point of view of teaching everyone how to judge the accuracy and presentation of work.

This is important because this is how you do science - you're always checking yourself to make sure your work and conclusions are valid. Sometimes you're too close to the problem to see errors in your own work, so the reviewer finds them for you.
