Why is it cogito ergo sum instead of dubito ergo sum?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

By Descartes logic, somebody had to doubt the circumstances, not think of them, therefore, shouldn't the saying be, "Dubito, ergo sum."?

OpenStudy (alyssajobug):

is that in like spanish or something?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, it's basic Latin... and basic philosophy.

OpenStudy (alyssajobug):

ok, haven't taken latin yet, next year sorry!

Allow me to translate...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why is it "I think therefore I am" instead of "I doubt therefore I am."?

OpenStudy (alyssajobug):

because not everyone doubts everything, but everyone thinks about something and their opinion makes them who they are rather than their doubt making them who they are don't you think?
