A line passes through the points (-3,-4) and (5,12). What is the equation of the line that is perpendicular to this line and passes trough the midpoint of the two points?
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
@Directrix I have the answer, I just want to know if its right
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
Is the answer y=-1/8+20 ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
m=y2-y1 => m=-4-12/-3-5 = -16/-8=2
right ?;)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
m=y2-y1/x2-x1
!!!

OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
Your supposed to subtract 12--4 and then subtract 5-3 which will actually equal to 8 as the slope
OpenStudy (anonymous):
!
look :
(-3,-4) and (5,12)
x1 y1 x2 y2
12-(-4)/5-(-3)=16/2 = 8
you was right !
sorry !:p
So ... you get slope -1/8 ... right ?!;)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
then :
y2-y1=m(x2-x)
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
yeah i do get -1/8
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
Then m=20

no prob !:P
non onon oon nono ono noon ! we got m = 8 . so m always is 8
therefore :
12-y=8(5-x)
12-y=40-8x
-y=40-8x-12
-y=-8x + 28
y=8x-28
m=8 now too !;)
Got it ?:)
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
I dpnt understand how in the 3rd line you switch -12 to the other side
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
@E.ali
OpenStudy (anonymous):
there is not 3rd line !
tell me first what was the slope ?:)
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
oh wait nvm! i figured it out!

OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
so after doing that what will we do?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
look you said m ( slope ) is 8 .
you found that ... !
ok ?
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
hmnm
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so . if we want find an equation for a line use this :
y2-y=m(x2-x)
ok ?
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):
so get numbers in m and y2 and x2 .what will we have ?
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
y=8x-28
OpenStudy (anonymous):
you get it ?!
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
yeah. so is that the final answer then?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yea !

i think you re smart !;)
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
thank you so much, you made my day=D
OpenStudy (anonymous):
you re welcome ;)
i do nothing !!! you knew thew answer ... ;)
OpenStudy (ineedhelp10):
And how can I make sure my answer is correct?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
you can draw that line !;)
