Can someone explain to me how to reduce fractions to mixed numbers for example 4/3=1 1/3. How do you figure this out??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide the numerator into the denominator, your answer is the whole number and whatever is left over is your new numerator over your old denomiator, for instance 5/3. 3 goes into 5 once with a remainder of 2. so 1 is your whole number 2 becomes the new numerator and use your old denominator 3. 1 2/3
