OpenStudy (anonymous):

what was the first form of metabolism and what molecules were associated with it ? in what organisms ? and does it still exist?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

I don't think I understand your question. The definition of metabolsim is the set of biochemical reactions involved in storing fuel molecules and converting fuel molecules into energy, or can also be a set of biochemical reactions in a cell.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

There are many metabolic processes and forms of metabolisms that have occured. Some of the more simpler ones are those in bacteria, or prokaryotic species.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well , what was the first form of it?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

I'm thinking photosynthesis. Plant metabolism?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

from some research that I've done till now , I guess the first form of metabolism was one that had carbon as the reducing agent .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

before the whole oxygen thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

something in methanogens and such

OpenStudy (abb0t):

The simplest type of carbon oxidation is C + O\(_2\) \(\rightarrow\) CO\(_2\)

OpenStudy (abb0t):

If I remember correctly, that's a type of process in which methane is produced by some bacteria known as methanogens. I am not too familiar with this, but you can definitely look into this. I don't know that this was the first form of "metabolism". You might want to look this up in your book.

ok thanks
