How do we know what angle the Earth or any planet is tilted at?

I ask this only because there is no up, down, left, or right in space. so what do we base what 0 degrees is? Or what is up, down, etc.?

Actually scientists treat space like a plane (a flat surface) so there are still directions and degrees in space. With this plane in mind they can then assign degrees to all the objects in space that sit on the said plane (which is often called the time-space continuum or just the continuum).
