1/4x + 2/3 < 3/4 I got 1/3 when I multiplied the whole thing by 12. But when I added, subtracted and used the common denominators method, I came to 3/12x<1/12 How do you solve that? Please explain. I also have another question, if you were to graph an equality that was an improper fraction, would you graph it converting to a mixed number or just using that improper fraction to graph?

OpenStudy (mathlegend):

When you multiply by 12... you should have gotten 3x + 8 < 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I did, but the final answer I got was 1/3.

OpenStudy (mathlegend):

Oh, 1/3 is correct.

OpenStudy (mathlegend):

x < 1/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you tell me how you would do it 3/12x<1/12 that way? How do you divide that?

OpenStudy (mathlegend):

So how would you read that? 1/12 divided by 3/12 right? Because if you had 4x < 8 It would turn into 8 divided 4...

OpenStudy (mathlegend):

When dealing with fractions what ever you are dividing by you must flip... then multiply

OpenStudy (mathlegend):

1/12 * 12/3

OpenStudy (mathlegend):

What does that equal @one2345

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, I see. Isn't it 2?

OpenStudy (mathlegend):

12/36 = 1/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oops, I multiplied the numbers across by accident... Thanks! And can you please answer the last question?

OpenStudy (mathlegend):

I suppose you would change that to a Mixed number since it would be better to see where it should go.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thank you sooooo much!

OpenStudy (mathlegend):

You are welcome. :)
